Arkham Sanitarium: Soul Eater (2014) Reviews

  • Indie film makers - stop asking friends to post fake reviews!

    ivandethclown2014-10-26

This film is OK. Nothing more. Nothing less. It's not awful but it's nothing great. It's a low budget indie movie therefor we know that we're going to get bad acting, poor dialog and cheesy FX. That being said, this is one of the better low budget indie movies out there at the moment. Now here comes my issue with this and most other indie movies that are made by people who have Facebook accounts. These film makers get all of their Facebook chums to rate the film a 9 (since they know that IMDb punishes 1s and 10s as they assume that the lowest or highest votes are from trolls for the 1s and friends of the film makers and actors for the 10s) and even worse they then get these Facebook friends to post reviews to IMDb, RedBox and other internet venues. Therse reviews are always glaringly positive and incredibly obviously fake! If you want your pals and family to post a review tell them to easy off on all of the arse kissing. When someone proclaims an indie film as being one of the best movies ever, it's clear to anyone with any intelligence that it's a bogus review. I know that Ron Fitzgerald and Jim Sorfleet have 5000 Facebook friends, the limit by Facebook, and most of these "friends" are shills who take to IMDb, RedBox, etc. to leave BS reviews. How about letting actual viewers review your movies and tell the honest truth about how the movie is? Having friends and family post fake reviews does not help you. It hurts actually. If someone reads all of these stellar reviews then sees the movie and sees how bad it is, or how badly the reviewers have lied at least, they will forever not trust your work! Ask Potent Pictures about this. They have more fake friends reviews then any other indie film makers and people all know how awful their movies are. So anyhow, anywho, this movie is OK, the first 3 stellar reviews are fake and you all need to stop with the fake reviews. That is all! Ivan Deth; Horror Clown, always honest, never phony. Over and out!

  • My Review Of "Arkham Sanitarium: Soul Eater"

    ASouthernHorrorFan2014-09-25

Julian Grant's "Arkham Sanitarium" adds new touches to the found footage horror film. The story focuses on three paranormal investigators who manage to penetrate the grounds of the "impenetrable" Arkham Sanitarium to document the legendary paranormal activity said to dominate the property. Throw in a deadly cult dedicated to Cthulhu , a psychotic masked maniac and one creepy location and this film screams chilling good time! The story is a pretty nice, and strong story that centers on a dilapidated asylum that was once the site to a brutal tragedy. Told in a found footage format with a bit of a fresh spin, "Arkham Sanitarium" manages to be spooky, atmospherically thrilling, and completely entertaining. The direction that Grant takes with telling this horror story is creative, modern and beyond the normal of what is considered found footage. Of course I have to declare my skepticism that a police department would invest time and money in having footage put in a chronological, creative edit ready for the big screen. It is a bit of a hindrance as a horror fan but not one that takes everything away from this film. The drama, acting, and ability for the cast to create great characters is 50/50. At times the dialog hits perfectly within context to events and carry the story forward. Other times things get if-y with weak spots showing in the writing. For most of the first half of "Arkham Sanitarium" I wasn't buying the acting, one character is sociopath, and the other two are in the midst of a lover quarrel that deals with the "third man" in the paranormal group. It felt contrived and unnecessary. However as the film hits the middle portion and the grander design becomes clear, all that frustration with the characters fade away and some real entertaining, quality performances put the story full in the horror vein. Although this film's horror comes with the clever dark satirical energy. The special effects are decent, creature effects and design could have been better, but for a low budget (or no budget) film what is presented works well enough to be both gory and entertaining. There is a bit of CGI used in "Arkham Sanitarium" but it is minimal. There is a bizarre blend of animated sequence that serve well to create a psychological boost to the madness but because of the framing device used I "threw down another flag". Once more though all becomes forgiven somewhat because of just how steady the continuity and atmosphere of the film truly is, and how well it does in keeping the viewer invested to the story. Plus the soundtrack is what it should be, instrumental, dark, driven and eerie. Overall "Arkham Sanitarium" manages to be a good, low budget paranormal nightmare. The added killer cult element to the horror really is what makes so much forgivable about this film's flaws. Add to that some decent acting, and a creative twist to found footage format, and you have a horror film worth watching. And that dark satirical humor that exists in "Arkham Sanitarium" is on point, and entertaining. I have watched tons of found footage over the past few years (the majority paranormal stuff) and I have to say that "Arkham Sanitarium" is one of the better films. Definitely give it a watch and see for your self.

  • don't see

    midomaam-132-466952014-10-28

this is a very bad movie ,boring ,actually it's a waste of time , found footage ,low budget which is not an excuse for the bad acting ,bad script ,characters and directing . it's an ambush ! i was excited at first ,off course i didn't expect to see batman when i read the name ,though i expected a good movie . from the first moment i got disappointed . only 3 characters in this one and yet very bad script and acting . after about 10 minutes i thought it was a comedy rather than horror or a very bad mix of both . so here's and advice ,do not waste your time watching this one read a book or get some sleep better .

  • Arkham Sanitarium is a ride you better get strapped in for.

WOW! This was quite the movie going experience. Director Julian Grant took the popular found footage and put his own unique and wildly entertaining spin on it. The lead, Shannon Brown, was magnetic. Every time he was on the screen, I couldn't take my eyes off of him. Not only is Brown the lead, but he is also the comic relief. Just when the madness of the film gets to be a bit too much, Brown delivers the levity to keep you hooked. His co star Rinska Carrasco delivers as well as the frightened, but still strong, scientist investigating the alleged haunted clinic. I have seen Brown play multiple roles and I'm amazed by his seemingly endless range. One thing you know you are gonna get every time is a genuine performance and this film was no different. The chemistry and electricity between Brown and Carrasco is very real. The second male lead, Jerry, provides a great balance as the conservative, by the book scientist that is always at odds with Brown's character who is the fame hungry self annointed "face of the operation". There is a clever added element that certainly adds to the rivalry and tension between the characters that I won't give away. Overall, this film is a great ride, a VISUAL MIND RAPING for lack of a better term. Julian Grant pulled no punches and clearly made the film his twisted, genius mind wanted to make. That's why you have to love indie projects, filmmakers are not bound by what the "suits" deem appropriate. EASY 10 in my book, a MUST see!

  • Oh come on! Why didn't anyone save me from this?!

    rychartier2015-05-03

Seriously?! How did this get made? It's like some college students decided to raid their local film archive library and mix it into their "movie" while also successfully combining every Final Cut Pro and Adobe After Effects filter and effect (we are talking strobe, Blur and Sharpen, Distort, Lens Flare, Checkerboard, Paint Bucket, Noise and Grain, etc all in ONE scene). First off, this is supposed to be a found footage film, but towards the end, it's as if the people responsible for this film forgot. All of a sudden we have extra cameras, zooming capability on characters and different camera angles galore. The acting is beyond terrible. The characters were incredibly stupid. **Spoiler** For instance, the girl is trying to save her husband from the killer octopus and she has an ax in her hand... BUT, you want to know what she does to save him? She DROPS the ax and proceeds to hit the monster with her husband's detached arm. Does this sound stupid to you?? Good because this is the whole movie. Oh and suddenly one of the characters has a gun in his back pocket after being captured three times. (And I know the filmmakers tried to make that campy). And this movie wasn't scary. Don't be fooled. There are no scary scenes, which was sad because the set up premise had lots of potential... well until the end when we discover that **spoiler** the killer monster is a horny octopus; the henchman looks like he works at KFC; and the mediator-dude with the cane (which is a useless prop) is like a character from the 1960s Batman TV series. I don't write movie reviews--- but I felt obligated to save the world. Now, I LOVE scary movies and I even love the C-rated campy ones, but this film is entirely on a different scale of being very, very, very bad. In fact, IMDb really needs a new Genre called "Lame" because then when I want to waste money, time and dignity, I'll choose this. Don't do it... I know some people will now want to watch how bad this is, but don't do it.
