Not sure what I was looking at
While it was okay, half the time I couldn't make out what half the props were in this movie. I would have rated it higher if I understood the ending. Who were the people at the picnic table? Who was the little girl? Who got killed? And who were they killed by? Really? I can't find this explanation anywhere. This is the 4th movie I had to go search online for an explanation of the ending. Do writers not care about endings? It dragged for a bit then late in the game the killings started around the B&B. And when they came, they came fast. How did the short haired chick survive a gunshot among other things to get to the last girl? And where did the hammer come from? Hmm. Too many questions while watching this.
Unexpectedly Good
Gave this film a chance and was pleasantly surprised at how good it is. With a budget of $87,000 it was a lot better than many films with 100 times that budget. When you consider the amount of money some Hollywood films cost I bet the makers of Bastard must feel pretty proud of themselves. IMDb hasn't listed how much return was made on the expenditure but I hope they made a profit. I wont go into the details for fear of spoiling it for anybody reading this save to say there are plot twists and jumpy scares but also with an intelligence in the story. So give it a chance as I did. If you don't like it then at least its only 80 minutes long and if you do like it then good :-)
Title makes it sound like an exploitation piece....it's not..
So we have a winner for the most hilarious title of a film this year. A film with that title would have usually been associated with Brian Bosworth, or some old western film starring Charles Bronson, or any actor from that era who would suit the word 'grizzled'.... But this film features newlywed, hitch-hiking serial killers, a brother and sister on the run, and a suicidal, alcoholic cop. Of course, they get caught in an increasingly bizarre series of murders committed by a masked killer near a mountain-town bed and breakfast.... It's another one of those very deceptive horror films that have numerous 'favourable' review highlights on the cover of the DVD, stating things like 'it's the best retro slasher this week!', or 'scarier than death...literally'. If you've seen a lot of horror films, especially those that are of a low budget and cost less than £8.00 in your local supermarket, you know that you should take these quotes with a huge pinch of salt and lower your expectations. But when a film has this title, you cannot help but keep those expectations high, and hope for once, that someone has made a nostalgic reference to those wonderful stalk 'n slash films of the eighties. This isn't it, and because it's trying to homage so many different films, it gets lost in it's own convolutions. Every character is suspect, but there are ones who are just that little bit more creepy, having strange traits, or saying inappropriate things so they are obviously red herrings, but it's fun to see the writers of the film think they can fool the viewer. Aside from the film being quite bizarre for no good reason, it does hold a few things you would associate with those films of the eighties, namely terrible acting and unnecessary nudity. And that wonderful trope of people going to the wrong place at the wrong time, it's an age old problem that never seems to disappear from lazy writing. But the ending, while it's supposed to be shocking and turn the narrative on it's head, you kind of guess that this was the case, as there is always the quiet couple who never really stray of the path, but it is quite amazing that the final shot is the rationale for the title. So all in all, it's just another poorly made horror film, trying to disguise the fact by having the DVD cover look like the cover for 'Hatchet'. Aside from the audacious ending, and a turn of events once they reach the cabin, it's pretty forgettable stuff.
You WILL Want To See This Film
This movie IS what you want out of a horror film. Personally, I love discovering films that could one day be a horror cult classic. This is one of them! There's twists, scares, gore, sex, comedy and a little bit of irony all rolled into one. As someone who has seen more than my fair of BAD horror movies, I can definitely tell you this is NOT one of them. I walked away very satisfied and would even sit through it again with friends. That's the kind of feeling you should want walk away from a movie with. The acting is good, really good. The direction was on point. The death scenes were quick, but in a TCM kind of quick that made them seem a little more realistic. The characters also aren't all one dimensional teens that you root for to get killed off. I just say, give the film a chance. It's not a masterpiece, but it isn't meant to be. It's meant to be fun (think Sleepaway Camp, kind of fun) and if your idea of fun is watching a good horror that can poke fun at itself with you, then you have found your afternoon flick!
Good film but what was the ending about!!
OK so I got this DVD and hoped it would be a good horror film, yes it was like at the start two hitch hikers hail down a car then this bit was unexpected the hitch hiker man just slams a hammer into the drivers head then proceeds to chop him up but you don't see it in full frame just his head and arm chopping him up. The female just waits for him to finish and they drive off, these two are newly married and are murderers. Next couple is a brother & sister leaving home and they are picked up by the murdering couple, they go into a bar and ask where could they get a room for the night, they're told where to go and meet the owner of the hotel and so next day they go on a hike with the owner so the killing begins and then you find out it's the owner doing the killing a woman. Then this is where I am confused you see the owner has a husband and she is Pregnant and there is a toddler then the man cuts the baby out and feeds it blood from its bottle, the owner kills him and then goes to one of the survivors tied up on a bed and showed her her nipples which looked weird, the survivor escapes and kills the owner. Why was a baby fed blood? I don't get it do they eat flesh like cannibals or what, if anyone can explain the ending I would love to know it. ,
