First Love (2018) Reviews

  • A Terrible Love Story About Two Uninteresting People

    Desertman842019-05-17

The last film of Aga Muhlach that I saw was "In The Name Of Love",a movie that was released back in 2011.It was shot on location in Japan and it told a story of a dance instructor and his romantic love affair with a dancer named Cedes. Although it has an interesting plot, the happy ending ruined everything as it became both contrived and formulaic. When I reviewed that film,I concluded that Aga Muhlach's "brand" of portraying handsome characters have been fully entrenched and Filipino films have a long way to go with respect to international film standards.I once again happen to see another film made by Aga entitled,"First Love" together with Bea Alonzo. Did the conclusions I made from my film review,"In The Name Of Love" still hold true? Before we answer these questions, let us discuss what "First Love" is all about. The movie that stars Muhlach and Alonzo tells the story of two people - Ali and Nick -that fell for one another at Vancouver.Ali happens to be a reserved businessman while Nick happens to be a photographer who is hopeful and full of optimism. The tension in their romance is that both are stricken with medical conditions and being a minority in a foreign land. Although the movie has an interesting plot, it lacks authenticity considering that both Muhlach and Alonzo lack chemistry. As for the performances,we get to see Muhlach once again trying to live up to his 'pretty boy image' to portray Nick.Meanwhile,Alonzo - one of the better Filipino actresses - is forgettable here as Ali. Due to it,we get to see uninteresting and boring characters. Added to that,we also get to see a contrived and formulaic love story that is basically typical among many Filipino melodramatic films particularly when harsh realities of the story are presented. The tensions and plot twists comes at the right place and the right time when the story needs them to happen. Finally,we get to see two people fall for one another that is brought about by having difficult situations. In the end,we get to see Ali and Nick as people who use each other for escape and coping mechanism in their difficulties of life. While both characters have indicated that they are willing to die for each other, their story is simply unreal and lacks realism. As the story ends,we get to see how both try to deal with their difficulties to emit tears from the viewer. In the end,we see a poor Filipino film.In that regard,it is clearly seen that Philippine cinema have a long way to go particularly in writing screenplays and not one of the better Filipino films that I could recommend. Skip this one and watch something else.

  • Zero Chemistry

A love story between two boring people with no chemistry. Cinematography is nice. Pinoy films are improving on the technical side but we seriously lack creative screenwriters. Star

  • Very Disappointing No Substance

    felixbautista2018-11-15

This movie totally lacks any imagination..substance. The plot and scenes lacks imagination. Very disappointing. Aga has no acting ability. throughout the movie he was carrying his shoulder bag. To top it all the last scene where he was wearing a space suit is so laughable..what were they thinking.. ? Paul Soriano needs to improve his directorial skills. No need to extend the screening of this movie abroad..

  • Seven Pounds meets Fault in our Stars.

    mixmastajan-295972018-10-17

Seven Pounds, basically just the heart part with Rosario Dawson and Will Smith, and How Wills character starts to question his intentions and might see a happy life with Rosario's Character. Fault in our stars, they both have life threatening health conditions, fall in love, life is more than sickness, Carpe Diem... yolo... Etc etc... If you're familiar with these 2 movies, you will hate this movie because it's clearly just for tears. I'm an Aga Muhlach fan... But this is no where near his best. Bea's acting skills are not on display in this film.
