You can usually count on certain things with a Hallmark movie. It will have a certain kind of ending. If it's a Rom/com rather than Movies and Mysteries, it won't have too much surprising. It will be mostly family friendly but perhaps appeal more to mom and dad, especially mom. This movie is exactly what you'd expect. So what makes some of these movies better than others. The leading actors in the movie are a big factor. For me it's hard to go wrong with Lindy Booth and she did not disappoint. Booth has an infectious joi de vivre. She's fun. It's hard not to have fun with her. Another big factor for me in a Rom/com is whether the movie makers give the leads time together. If in a 90 minute movie, half the screen time setting the background and dealing with the problems facing the characters, the movie isn't as much fun as if they give all the screen time they can to the love story. I walk away from this movie remember the time spent together by Lindy Booth and Trevor Donovan. They had chemistry.
Is it possible that Ms. Booth didn't star in a Christmas movie in 2018? Thank goodness they've put her in a winter movie. Lindy Booth's ability to show sadness and sparkling hopefulness in her enchanting eyes at the same time lifts this work above the ordinary. Unfortunately, the male lead is just a handsome block of clay, unable to portray even the simplest emotion. As usual though, the supporting actors do a fantastic job with what screen time they get. Caitlin Stryker as the best friend is a joy to watch, as is Lynda Boyd. And it was a kick to see Hill Street Blues star Ed Marinaro again.
The two main characters seem more believable together than some movie couples. Her friend (and she) wouldn't be telling so many people she is pregnant if she only found out a week ago. There is a silent scene in which they communicate a lot without saying anything, which is unusual especially for a Hallmark movie.
I love Hallmark movies and they always have a little cheesy aspect to them. They're infectious. Lindy was just way too cheesy for me. I feel a different leading actress would have been better. I can normally watch the same ones over and over but once is enough for this one. It was nice seeing a movie without a restaurant or food theme.
Watched for Trevor Donovan and wasn't expecting much of a story, but I was surprised. I hope he does a Christmas movie this year.
