Christmas in Tattertown is a failed 1988 TV pilot turned television special created and directed by Ralph Bakshi about a place where everything discarded in the world came alive. It aired on the cable television network Nickelodeon. When a young girl called Debbie, her pet dog and her toy doll Muffet end up in Tattertown, Muffet comes to life and, seeking freedom, refuses to go back to Debbie, who is unable to understand this. Debbie learns more about Tattertown and realizes that there is no Christmas there, so she tries explaining what Christmas is and helping the townspeople celebrate it for the first time. However, Christmas reminds Muffet of the day she was given to Debbie and decides to sabotage it with the help of her minion Spider. The story is narrated by the town's anthropomorphic saxophone. The short shares many similarities with Bakshi's more adult take on a similar idea in his follow up part animated part live action film Cool World.

Gonzo animation, tobacco pie and Christmas!
I recorded this show when it first ran on Nickelodeon and watched it countless times over Christmas and school vacation over the years. No matter how many times I saw it it always seemed fresh, there was so much strange stuff happening. Some gags I got right away- when Muffet meets Sidney the Spider, she's basically walking into the last scene of every Merrie Melodies cartoon, where all the citizens mobilize to beat up the bad guy who kidnapped the hero's girlfriend. But I never got the joke (or the irony) about the Christmas Tree, Mr Tannenbaum, being Jewish until I was much older. If Tattertown had been picked up it would perhaps have jump-started the adult animation boom that The Simpsons and Ren & Stimpy eventually pioneered. Anyway, some others complain the characters are undeveloped but this was a pilot. Also, sometimes Bakshi just rolls that way. I'd rather watch a cartoon with amazing animation that makes me laugh anyway. I think this is actually one of Bakshi's best productions, I enjoyed it way more than Wizards or LOTR.
I can see why this was never picked up
After a string of cult hits including Fritz the Cat and Lord of the Rings, Ralph Bakshi returned to television with the Nikelodeon pilot 'Tattertown'. The show was about a world where everything that humans discard winds up. Debbie, a girl transported to this world, would explain to the denizens of Tattertown their worth separated from the human world. The pilot dealt with Christmas, albeit not very well, and was reconfigured as a special to be aired on November 21st 1988. There's a reason why you've never heard it. It ain't that good. Narrated by Keith David, and featuring typically eccentric Bakshi animation, I can see that the concept would have been full of potential, but the characters are all over the place, and the Angelika-like antagonist (all you Rugrats fans will get what I mean) was very, very annoying. Worth watching as a curiosity.
Ralph Bakshi's Christmas in Tattertown is interesting pilot for a proposed series
Christmas in Tattertown was originally the pilot for a proposed series called Tattertown created by Ralph Bakshi for Nickelodeon. It follows the adventures of a little girl and her two dolls: a dog and a girl. With her imagination, the girl and the dolls wind up in Tattertown, a place where all the lost items wind up. The girl doll escapes and plots to wreak havoc on everyone. In this episode, she makes like Santa and tries to take over the town. The human girl plays a record of Bing Crosby's "White Christmas" and gets everyone to be nice to each other which upsets the girl doll though she also gets overcome with emotion and gets presents...As with many Bakshi works, this can get frantic but there are some nice touches throughout. I liked the saxophone as the narrator and some of the tributes of various '30s and '40 animation with the Crosby ending especially good. Unfortunately, I saw this on YouTube where the third segment had no sound so instead of a 6, I'll have to give this one a 5. Maybe I'll change it if I see a more complete version.
