Blood (2004) Reviews

  • Inappropriately hot and funny Canadian film.

BLOOD is an adaptation of a play by the same name. It's a dark comedy that revolves around a brother and sister desperate to have sex with each other. The sexual tension between the two main (and only) characters was authentic, which they later confirmed during the Q&A. What makes the film truly unique is that it was shot in one long take, four times. And they just choose the best one. The dialogue is thick, biting, and hilarious. The characters even seriously injured each other during one take and kept on going. The entire film was shot on a Montreal sound stage, with a couple of exteriors. The director explained how he tricks the eyes of his audience into not being bored by one small set by having each room a different color, and then using an occasional split screen during rapid dialogue. I thought that was pretty cool because it totally worked on me. I like the fact that the director replaced the main characters, originally intended to be in their late forties, with young twenty-somethings. I think the sexual tension would have seemed weird and gross otherwise. Instead it was actually pretty hot. This is what Canadian film is all about. (7/10)

  • Intriguing and sexy, but . . .

So I saw this movie, and was quite captivated by the way it was filmed. No one can say that it wasn't original. The entire film is shot in one room, and consists of only two actors. Even when another character is said to come into the scene, the camera cuts away until the guy exits, leaving the dialogue and the imagination of the audience to figure out what happened. For a while, I even doubted whether there was another man, when the Noelle said that she invited one of her Johns to come up. A lot of the dialogue seems improvised, but in a good way. The film seem realistic, was never boring and often really funny, especially during the fights. I think this can be attributed to the talents of both of the actors, who are fresh, sarcastic and seem to feed off of each other. When the two main characters, brother and sister, bicker, it seems realistic in the way that they get mad and insulted over the simplest insults, such as calling another "fat." The movie is filled with interesting revelations and philosophical existentialism about the origin of clichés and drug addictions. However, I often doubted the sincerity of the characters. I wasn't sure if they were kidding about their lifestyles and convictions - like whether one was really a prostitute, or if they said things to scare or even impress the other. My only other criticism is that I didn't believe that they were brother and sister, because they seemed to be in a place away from prying eyes, where no sense of boundary existed, and they acted in a way unconvincing of their blood relationship. But other than that, it was pretty hot. The sexual tension was definitely there, but there was no shame, as I thought such kind of taboo relationships might have. I'm not condemning, I'm just saying is all. My favourite part is the ending, as you can see the building up and somewhat mending of the relationship between the two main characters. And it was sweet. When all is said and done . . .

  • What an Amazing Film which I Almost Never Heard Of!

    Violet_Loves_Iliona2008-08-22

This brilliant and under-rated film is about a brother and sister in their twenties who reunite after five years, during which time the brother stayed away from his sister, supposedly the "bad one" in the family. The sister lives a wild life, having previously used drugs and prostituted herself. The brother turns up on her door one busy night and, because of various circumstances, they find themselves in a situation in which they explore, in detail, their feelings for each other, and finally admit something neither thought they would ever be able to admit about themselves - that they are in love with each other, and always have been... Indeed, the sister makes a comment along the lines of "everyone thinks that you're such a good boy and I'm so bad, but I know the real you, Chris, and you're every bit as bad as your sister". Despite the rather harsh themes dealt with by this film, it actually becomes a beautiful, touching portrayal of an unusual and forbidden relationship, and the audience is put in a position of wanting the brother and sister to get together. I was amazed by how good this film was. Admittedly, I do love Canadian films generally, but this one really touched me in a profound and meaningful way. I give it 10/10.

  • Wonderful and artful

This film is wonderful and artful. many dynamic and visually interesting techniques used in filming, primarily at the beginning. as the story advances, then the techniques get more subdued, as the story itself takes over. it is inventive and creative, and not at all what one is used to. thank god that there are still some films out there which are not the basic mundane crap. it is nice to view cinema which is made for an audience with an intelligent mind. it is very close to a European film, such as Italy or Spain. the cast of two is dynamic and engaging. the film grips you the entire time, with a mild titillation. i highly recommend this film.

visually inventive, which is more than can be said about most films... incredibly sordid storyline/character dynamics however and without the aforementioned inventiveness it would probably be a bit too much to take. good collaborative acting b/w the two cast members also... 8/10 get this flick a poster image; it deserves at least that *sigh* ten lines minimum now all of a sudden ? OK then... what else can i say... this really isn't a good idea. certain people are good at being concise and five lines are all they really need. why force people to be superfluous? not a good decision on the behalf of the IMDb webmasters i'm afraid... am i there yet... ?
