De omweg (2000) Reviews

  • Strange, dull and the wrong amount of feminism

    DeTekkel2004-03-17

"De Omweg" is one of the worst movies i have ever seen. I watched it on a pay 2 view-channel, and i'm so glad i didn't get the bill... The story is set in 1980's... Why?? Nobody knows! The story could have been told in any period because there is absolutely no reference to the date (just the scenery). There is so little dialogue in the movie that it becomes dull and when there is a line it's something like: "Could you pass the sugar". But the main reason i dislike it is because of the huge amount of strange feminism. Although feminism isn't a bad thing, this movie makes it bad. All the male characters are b***ards. The boyfriend who dumps the lead character when she's pregnant, the strict father, the friend who tries to rape her and offcourse the German writer who is so dislikable that you can't understands why she likes him. After the movie you don't like men, even if you are one! The only good thing about this movie is Tamar van den Dop, but that's because i have a weak spot for curly-hair women...

  • Thomas Bernhard

    VerenaS2005-03-05

This film is not about feminism or something like that, it is a film about Thomas Bernhard and an example for a possible influence on his consumers. It is important to know this fact, because I think that Thomas Bernhard is not very popular outside of Austria. He was one of the best authors of Austria and private exactly like the figure in the film. He was not able to have personal relations to another person for a longer time. He was also a very difficult person, but on the other hand very sensible. In my opinion, the film shows this sides very good. Also some very disturbing moments in the life of the woman. But on the other hand the film tries to show the life of this woman and the influence of Thomas Bernhard on her. And exactly this point of the story is not solved very lucky. It is more like two lives that collides, but nobody can say why. So I think it is not the best film to show the character, the work of or simple Thomas Bernhard, but to rate this film it is important to have the right focus on it. I think it would be more effective to read books of Bernhard, watch some of the very good documentaries on him and find yourself the Thomas Bernhard in you.
