Ezequiel, the eldest brother, arrives from Spain to get married under his parents' pride-filled gaze. Géminis (2005) Reviews

  • Disturbing

This was the most disturbing movie I've seen in a long time. I started watching it just before going to bed, with no intention to actually stay up and finish it, but once it started, I simply couldn't stop watching. It completely captured my attention, which happens very very rarely as of late, so all my compliments to the director. This is one of those movies that most people will not appreciate because of it's subject, which is a social taboo. And it's understandable. However, if you are able to appreciate a good story with an upsetting content that is not meant to entertain you, and will probably shake you up, you should give it a chance.

  • Disturbing, realistic movie

By sheer chance, I happened to watch two movies about incest in two consecutive days. The first was Italian, "Drifters" (2011), which is a cheerfully amoral take on the subject, in spite of incest being the result of the calculated seduction of a sibling by the other, and facilitated (one hopes unwittingly) by the parents. In this movie, incest is just slightly naughty, and can be willed away by pretending it didn't happen. Gemini is a far different movie. Director Albertina Carri doesn't moralize; the sexual relation between brother and sister Jere and Meme is apparently consensual on both sides and not devoid of love (and jealousy, as the supermarket scene shows). We don't know how it began. However, it has a devastating effect in Ezequiel, the brother, and especially Lucia, the mother, who has great pretensions about her family and, as many wealthy Argentinians, believes that incest is something that happens among the lower classes. At the end of the movie the whole family is in turmoil, although we don't know what each individual knows. I have seen two feature films by Albertina Carri, this one and Anger, "La Rabia" (2008). Both are about families apparently normal but deeply dysfunctional just below the surface. And in both movies the discovery pf the truth has dire consequences. Direction and script (the latter by Carri and Santiago Giralt) are flawless. Excellent acting by all concerned. A superior movie in all aspects. Carri is a director to watch.

  • Taboo Aesthetic

    AvinashPatalay2009-07-06

Happened to watch this movie late night when it was aired on World movies channel. At the outset the director needs to acknowledged for holding the reigns quite well and literally does a tight-rope walking to ensure that the movie doesn't classified as a Tinto Brass or worse a soft-porn. The complexities of a modern family is portrayed effectively. The relationship between the members of the family is fleshed out effectively yet managing to touch-base on the taboo. The wedding forms the baseline of the story and the events built around it come about naturally (family dinner, shopping, wedding dress, night-out etc). And its precisely these factors which give aesthetic feel to it. On technical front the movie is rich in the camera-work and lighting. The usage of mirrors, shadows and following the character would seem Kubrick inspired. The director chose his way of ending the story which is purely is his prerogative which perhaps for a few it might seem Over-the-top. PS:: And an apt title indeed.

  • Another Good Argentinian Film

Yes, some will say this movie is disturbing. That's not always a bad thing in a film. Although I did find it somewhat disturbing myself, I also found it very intriguing and enjoyable, party because it WAS disturbing. The acting is great and the story is like nothing I've ever seen before. The camerawork is wonderful as well. There are some great shots in here. Lately I've been enjoying a lot of Argentinian films I have noticed. I didn't consciously seek them out, but I find myself stumbling upon one gem after another. This is one of them. They make some great movies. Recommend.
