Halo: Helljumper (2012) Reviews

  • Excellent Halo fan short.

Great fan movie. It tells the tail of the ODST, which for those of you do not know are the heroes of new Mumbassa. Yeah they came in and saved the planet. This is an earlier version. How do you get to be an Obrital Drop Shock Trooper? Watch this short and find out. It is on you tube. Pros Great plot. Good acting. Good effects. Cons No enough money to do the story justice. I had the misfortune of watching Halo Nightfall and happened on this on you tube. Dan Wang should be given a chance to make a Halo movie. Give him 12 million and I am sure he could produce a classic.

okay, i get that this is a fan made series and all, but come on guys, you can do so much better than this. ill try to list the pros and cons orderly. Pro's: -great costuming. obviously spent a ton of time on that. -decent acting. -good music. -good quality video and sound -surprisingly good alien and battleship animation Con's: -cinematography sucks. I feel no excitement for the action scenes. The choreography difference between static, dialogue, and action scenes is just not there, its all the same. they focused more on the costumes and less on what was actually important, the film itself. -the SIMPLE effects are atrocious. (muzzle flashes, plasma, simple, simple things I learned to do better when I was 10.) You would be surprised how the little things can be of such BIG importance. -some acting is bad, but thats to be expected. All in all, this is just rated as a 2, even as an independent film. they just didn't focus on what was important, which was the story and the film itself. The ONLY reason this is rated so high is because of all the little Halo nerds who know nothing about film. Take this review to heart since its from an actual aspiring Filmmaker and not a little kid getting a hard on because its Halo

This is "Helljumper", a short film that runs for slightly over 20 minutes and was written and directed by Dan Wang. It's an American film, language is English, so you won't need any subtitles I guess. However, I am not sure what to make of this short movie. Admittedly, I may be very biased here as I am not big on action films, I generally do not really like war movies and I am not particularly into video games either. Never played Halo in my life, but I am always curious about new fan-made projects. Sadly, this one here did not get me curious about the game at all. The acting wasn't memorable at all, the script wasn't particularly great either and sometimes it looked fairly amateurish I must say. A bit of a pity as the guy who made this, Dan Wang, mentioned him earlier, is actually a fairly prolific cinematographer. However, it seems that writing and directing are not among this strengths. Or hopefully not yet. Thumbs down for this one here.
