HENRY O!, a feature-length documentary, tells the remarkable and inspiring story of Henry Oliu, a man blind since birth, who has overcome all the odds and made his major league baseball dream come true. Calling upon his love for sports and an encyclopedic memory for facts and figures, Henry hears the crack of the bat and knows if it's a single, double, or home run; he listens for the ball singing into the catcher's mitt and knows if it's a curve ball, fastball, or change-up. Henry is the color analyst on Mega Classica 820 radio, WMGG, the strongest Hispanic station in Florida's Tampa Bay Market. And at his side in the broadcast booth above Tropicana Field, whispering in his ear up-to-the-minute stats and field action only the eyes can see, is the love of his life, his wife Deb. Henry O! (2009) Reviews
Well done Henry!!!
An inspiring, sometimes touching film that tells the story of an immigrant remarkable success. Henry O traces the life of Enrique Oliu from childhood in Nicaragua to being sent away alone first to another country in south America then to finally arriving in the USA at the age of ten. Blind and unable to speak English, he was enrolled in a school for the blind in Florida. But that is not the real story though. The story that amazed me is that Henry grew up to become the major league radio announcer for the Tampa Rays. He calls a game live on his broadcast without seeing any of it. How does he do that is what the film guides us towards effectively. In its core, Henry O is a love story about a human being who really beat the odds! Well Done Henry!!!
Inspiring!
I saw this film at a preview in Boston. And I thought is was wonderful. And I'm not even a baseball fan. Henry O! isn't really a baseball movie. Major League baseball is the setting. Henry Oliu the man is the movie. And an inspiring man and movie at that. A sightless boy comes to America unschooled in speaking English and rises above those and many other limitations to become a MLB radio color-commentator. Henry O! made me feel I can achieve almost anything! Henry Oliu is an inspiration! And who knows? Maybe now I'll catch a baseball game or two. Take me out to the ball game, buy me some peanuts and crackerjack.......
He does something that seems impossible to achieve.
HENRY O! is in many ways a fascinating documentary. It captures the zest for life of its main character, Enrique "Henry" Oliu, a "color" analyst for WMGG Mega Classica 820 radio, the strongest Hispanic radio station in the local market, for whom he provides game analysis for the Tampa Bay Rays baseball games. There is nothing seemingly remarkable about that. There are a number of sports commentators in the U.S., but no one else whose ability to overcome unbelievable challenges can rival Henry's determination to succeed. The film reveals his spirit and his enthusiasm. Without giving anything away, I would recommend seeing this doc. It's inspirational!
