Charlie Fitzpatrick is the most successful high school basketball coach in Georgia history. While many of his players think of him as a father, his relationship with his own "bookworm" son, Evan, is strained. With the help of his wife, Laura and Evan's wife, Heather, Charlie determines the best way to connect and bond is to take his son and grandson, Markie, who has just announced he's dropping out of college to tour with his folk band, to a rustic mountain cabin for a weekend retreat. Only this cabin is the same site where he took his many winning teams to test their mettle over a grueling military-style obstacle course, the same one Evan, as a student never got the chance to complete. This is Charlie's idea of fun, Evan's idea of a nightmare, and Markie's idea of-well he's young and idealistic; he's just going with the flow. Over the course of three days, through hilarious moments, soul-searching moments and one experience that frightens them all to the core, the men discover what ...

Heritage Falls (2016) Reviews

  • Fantastic film for the whole family.

    healingpampered2016-09-26

Heritage Falls is a family film with a great story, wonderful performances and all around excellent production. This is a story that centers around a family which many real-life fathers, mothers, sons, daughters, brothers, sisters and grandchildren will relate to. A father who is very successful in the realm of local high school sports, to the point of being a local legend... is retiring. He has put his whole life into his student athletes, all of whom view him as a father figure and revere him. However, this father has never made a connection with his real son, partly due to his heavy involvement in his work and partly because they are simply very different people. The son is an aspiring writer and described as a "bookworm." The son has built a successful life on his own despite not following in his father's footsteps and also not succeeding in his chosen profession. He has a wife and son, both of whom he loves very much. HIS son has decided on a very different path from what was expected of him, echoing the relationship of his father and grandfather. Due to an unforeseen circumstance, the retiring coach decides to take his son and grandson to the mountain retreat where he used to take his basketball teams in order to help them bond and build their character. Needless to say, this idea does not go over well and results in a "fish out of water" scenario, which is very amusing and well played by the actors involved. There are a few surprises along the way and things are not as they seem, which provides most of the drama involved, but this film also hits many comedic moments along with a variety of scenes that run from heartwarming to tense to hilarious. The best known name in this cast is probably David Keith but the entire cast is great. Three actors really carry this whole film and are the cornerstone of the story... David Keith, Coby Ryan McLaughlin and Keean Johnson. They each take parts that could be relegated to clichés and elevate them to fully fleshed out and believable characters. Their chemistry is natural feeling and works wonderfully. They are all called on to produce a variety of emotions and scenes and it never falls flat or lags. The pacing is quick and the story keeps moving briskly in an interesting way. This is also a film that you can take the entire family to see. There is nothing in this film that you wouldn't want your kids to see and the message (while not heavy handed or obvious) is a solid one about family, yet not hokey or preachy. The people represented here are complex, far from perfect and dealing with everyday issues - just like the rest of us. There is one sequence of mild tension, when the fate of one of the characters is unknown for a brief period of time, but it wouldn't be scary or overwhelming for younger kids. Our family tries to support films that are family friendly and are also just really good movies. Heritage Falls is a perfect example of this. Here's hoping the team behind this film keeps going and makes more quality movies that the whole family can enjoy!

  • A Very Cool Movie

    maralvimmm2017-07-07

A very simple and cool film, an "Afternoon Session", a film that brings a compelling story to discuss the conflict relationships between parents and children. The film is from Netflix, with a well-cared production, despite the simplicity. The actors are not very well-known, but they fulfill their roles well, the filmmaker Shea Sizemore is new, versatile, writes and produces also, promises. Good movie!

David Keith stars in Heritage Falls which is about his relationship or lack thereof with his Coby Ryan McLaughlin. McLaughlin did not go into athletics the way Keith wanted, he owns a bookstore. Instead his sister Devon Chase became a star female basketball player. She's the real apple of his eye. Now Keith is retiring as a very successful high school basketball coach and he'd really like to bond with McLaughlin. McLaughlin and his wife Sydney Penny are having their problems with son Keann Johnson. They want him to go to college, he wants a music career. The women headed by the family rock Nancy Stafford, wife, mother and grandmother think these generations of men should go off alone in the woods and work out their issues. As it turns out Keith has a place in the remote Georgia woods that the teams used for retreats. The bulk of the film is spent at the woods with the three men of different generations of Fitzpatrick's coming to grips with each other and maybe actually listening to the others. Heritage Falls is a really nice family film with a few names in the cast that you might remember from past work. It's short on plot, but long and deep on character. I'd give this one a look.

  • A nice movie about family and differences

    ComedyFan20102017-09-01

One of the movies about family bonding. It is not extremely original but still very entertaining and enjoyable. We have different kinds of personalities, the sports guy, the guy who loves books and the one who is into music. All parts of one family and of different generations trying to get along and understand each other more. Set in a beautiful landscape it has a lot of lighthearted moments that make one laugh. Like for example the whole snake issue. And yet others that are emotional, like the one with the tie. At the same time what I liked that even with the fighting going on it wasn't really malicious. The acting is also good. I especially liked Coby Ryan McLaughlin. He portrayed so many emotions and it was the easiest to connect with his character. Although maybe it is because I also like books and not camping.
