Kill Buljo 2 (2013) Reviews

  • Only for the cult, let's stop watching sequels

I quite enjoyed the first extremely low budget outing of the Kill Bill parody Kill Buljo, because of it's on the target parody humor and fresh ideas. I love parody when it hits the mark on well known movie-styles, scenes and clichéd movie moments. When it doesn't hit the spot, it's seen as lame. I'm afraid KB2 is just there. Kill Buljo also was the start of the career of director Tommy Wirkola, which was picked up by Hollywood. We're bound to get more from his hands for years to come. Here he is following up his role as police man Sid Wisløff, while a new director, Vegar Hoel, is steering the film on shore. And we were warned by the early posters and the first trailer, saying it was the same stupid humor, only with bigger budget, more action, better script, better women and real actors. Well, that actually the most funny thing about the movie, that sentence! The first 15 minutes are quite OK, and promises the level of the humor, and we also get a plausible start for a story which took 6 years to get it's sequel. From then it goes downhill, and fast, I'm afraid. So why doesn't this function, when we meet a lot of the cast from the first movie? Well, the new director Vegar Hoel is an actor we know from some quite good films. (Mongoland, Dead snow, Monsterthursday, Rottenetter, Hansel & Gretel: Witch hunters, Eventyrland and so on.) As a director he clearly fails, but in his role as Obi Wan... Tjernobyl he is OK. The parody here is not take from well known movies for the most viewer, but from more obscure ninja B-movies, except for a couple of scenes from blockbusters like The Karate Kid and such. But there's too few well known scenes. I've seen a lot of movies, and some of the parodies will hit only a cult. I'm not easily offended by low sexist, sexual, racist, lavatory humor and wasn't here either, but still I laughed only once. It was mostly tedious and boring. And the rest of the quite crowded cinema only laughed a couple of other places. Still there were some talking during the movie. Still quite surprisingly, no one left during the show. The film is annoyingly cut with sound effects that are over the top, and more of a promotional stunt from a new sound studio, than something which helps the film. The studio is Foleystudio, so you know. I've read they had to do so, because there are several places in the film where the sound isn't working well. Well, it's overdone, and done so to be funny. Well, the only thing you could say on the positive side, is that it's done so throughout the film. So much that even John Waters would be embarrassed. I miss the precise humor from KB1, and then it misses the point. It's boring, and gives the stupid retard Cato a too big role. Now just a couple of hours after the showing, I simple can't remember a scene except a scene on the plane which was so utterly stupid I had to laugh. If you don't know what this is, expect a film with Leslie Nielsen humor, just on the small room side, and several grades less funny, and you're there. Let's stop watching these sequels. They seem to be the only thing film companies like doing nowadays. And they don't understand until it's too late for original stuff to be screened. And be warned: The film promises a third outing. Let's hope they bring down the budget, because I for one won't pay to see the next!
