Late One Night (2001) Reviews

  • One of the better Christiano films...

"Late One Night" is the story of ne'er-do-well and all around jerk Larry. He has problems at work and in his personal life - most of which stem from his tumultuous childhood. Larry and his friends go to their regular diner and have a confrontation with a soft-spoken young man whom Larry jokingly calls "Jesus." I must say, this is one of the better Christiano films. My wife and I were actually impressed with the quality of this one and it's good to see that as a film maker Dave Christiano is slowly but surely improving. Problems remain however, most notably the repetitive dialog. Larry's buddies tend to repeat almost everything Larry says and even Larry repeats himself several times in the movie. Let's not forget the street preacher near the beginning of the film. This character is the true embodiment of repetitiveness - echoing the same phrases over and over. Also, I noticed that in an effort to make the lines sound genuine Larry and his buddies say "man" before or after almost every line. For example: "Why are all those Christians at the factory fakes, man." It doesn't come off as genuine -it comes off as actors trying desperately to sound genuine and failing miserably. Despite the problems with the dialog the acting has also improved. It's nowhere near Oscar caliber but it's not terrible either. It services the story and all the actors are competent. I liked the owner of the diner - probably my favorite character in the movie! If there is one thing for which I can applaud this movie it is the presentation of the Gospel. The message of salvation is clear and no one who watches this movie can go before God and tell Him that they didn't know the Good News. While "Late One Night" is an encouraging improvement to the Christiano film library, Dave & Co. still have a lot of work to do before anyone besides church people will take their films seriously. I can't really see pulling someone off the street, especially intellectuals and sitting them in front of this movie. I'm pretty sure Dave Christiano is well on the road to really impressing me with a solid Christian movie - he's just not quite there yet.

  • Great movie

One of the best Christian movies I've ever seen. Believers will love it. Unbelievers will not understand the conviction this movie radiates, in doing so condemning it a cheesy cheap flick. The real treasure is not in how good the acting was or the special effects but in the storyline and message behind it. I really did enjoy it and would recommend it to all believer or not. But it is your choice to watch or not. I hope this comment would be helpful to some one. If not you can just watch the movie and write your own comment. Wow, I am supposed to make this longer but have nothing left to say. So I will go now.

  • Christian Classic

Dave Christiano came a long away from cheesy movies like "Crime of the Age". The film is incredibly powerful. Aside from the Christian message, the dialogue is crisp and fresh. The film moves quickly with believable characters and a good story line, as well as great performances by Gaffga and Heller. Whether you like the message or not (and I do), it's a fine piece of film-making that brings home the power of God's mercy and grace with amazing clarity and unquestionable style. It should serve as an example to wannabe Independent filmmakers on how to do this right. As always the Christianos bring a passion to their work which is lacking in many commercialized "Christian films".

  • Nice Short! Great Message!

Late One Night I saw "Late One Night" on the Christian Cable Broadcast Station TBN (Trinity Broadcast Network) and thought that this short was well written. It is available at least on VHS video through a Christian Video Company. Warning I might be giving some **SPOILERS** in this comment. It may be brief (Only 30some minutes) but "Late One Night" gets the True Christian message through. In brief at a diner a guy who is a regular of the diner and who recently got rejected from a Christian girl he works with and wants to date gets bitter at all Christians. While talking with his work buddies about how phony Christians are he starts harassing a gentleman at the diner when he finds out he is a Christian and starts asking all sorts of questions and calls the gentleman "Jesus", the gentleman answers the questions politely even though he's being harassed and yelled at. The waitress just stays out of it and the Cook tries to get him to stop the harassment. ***SPOILER**** While leaving the Christian gentleman pays the cook more than enough money for his meal and says something to him. A few minutes later as the harassing guy and his buddies leave and ask the cook what they owe. The cook refuses to take any money from them and says he's not going to take their money because "Jesus" already paid their Bill.

  • Obnoxious lout meets 'Jesus'

Late One Night concerns Brad Heller and his two buddies from the factory he works at in an all night diner that Hugh McClean runs and cooks at. These guys are regulars or otherwise McLean would have tossed Heller out of there for his obnoxious behavior. First he's hitting on the server and apparently he makes a habit of that as his boss at the factory remonstrates with him for sexually harassing a female co-worker. Anyway Heller and his pals are back again Late One Night and a quiet Josh Gaffga comes in for a bite. It seems as though the women that Heller is hitting on are both Christians so he's riled about that, that being the reason his itch isn't being scratched. Gaffga drops a Bible tract and that just sets Heller off and the obnoxiousness goes exponential. Watching this put me in mind of a couple of things. Year after year the Gay Pride Fest in Buffalo is always suffering the presence of some of these same people, behaving like Heller with bullhorns telling one and all how we're going to hell. It's the Christians who are in fact the obnoxious ones, the ones who are smug and self satisfied, I've got the Deity's ear and you haven't unless you get with my program. But they do serve a purpose. I remember three years ago, some of the young ones caught one of these self righteous persons alone and proceeded to dish out a little of what they've had to take all their lives. And in a safe environment because they weren't outnumbered for once. Heller's character also railed on about how hypocritical he's found most believers. Yesterday the disgraced former Governor of South Carolina, Mark Sanford, who made a big deal out of his faith, but who ran to Argentina to be with his mistress, won election to his old Congressional seat. His district is so red we could call it crimson. By a small margin the good bible believing born agains returned this man to his former job as Representative in Congress. After all he stumbled and fell, but he's a good culture warrior fighting against what's really important, stopping gays from obtaining equality. Heller says they're hypocrites and if that isn't the definition has to be changed. Sad, but in this world I see more to justify Heller's character than anything else. All the players here are active on the Christian film circuit. I guess the film is something of a tribute to Heller as actor that his character was so believable the wrong message was sent. All the born agains I've known aren't like the amiable and diffident Gaffga, they're obnoxious louts like Heller.
