Let Her Out (2016) Reviews

  • Way out

Some horror movies can easily be declared as way too predictable and cliché. This one for example, where anyone watching is way ahead (no pun intended) of our main character. We know what is going on, even without much of the backstory. It hurts (yes the viewer too, but in a different way) just watching some things develop. On the other hand, this has some really neat visual things up its sleeve and if you like horror, it does feed that lust and hunger you may feel inside. Not the best movie around or at Frightfest where I watched it, but not the worst one either. Just go with the flow, breathe and push ... well you know what I mean ...

"Let Her Out" caught my attention with two things; the first and most prominent thing was that it is a horror movie, of course. And the second thing was that the synopsis for the storyline seemed interesting and it could actually be a great movie. I will say that I didn't really find this 2016 horror movie to be a particular masterwork piece within the horror genre. While the story was entertaining enough for what it was, then the movie was just suffering from being overly predictable and actually also being way too generic - leaning way too much up against many other horror movies. So it other words, it lacks originality. There are some good enough moments throughout the course of "Let Her Out", mostly being the jump scares, but also the acting should be praised here. Alanna LeVierge really did carry the movie quite well with her performance as Helen. "Let Her Out" is hardly a movie that will scare you out of your wits, but there are some creepy and spooky enough moments here and there to make it worthwhile to sit through the entire movie. However, "Let Her Out" just wasn't an outstanding or particularly memorable movie. Nicely filmed and equally nicely edited, there is something oddly appealing about the movie in a strange way. And there are some rather interesting and somewhat disturbing visual scenes that were quite nice, and that was a definite boost in the right direction. Just a shame that the overall picture was so predictable and generic. Helen's fall into madness was interesting enough, but the movie just didn't fully have what it took to be outstanding. But when the transformation scene took place, it just went down the drain so fast. While it looked nice and had great special effects, it was just, and let's be blunt here, too much! This is hardly the type of movie that you will watch more than once, because the story doesn't have enough contents to sustain more than a single viewing. My rating of "Let Her Out" settles on a 5 out of 10 stars. While "Let Her Out" certainly is entertaining enough for a single viewing, there are far better horror movies out there.

I must admit I didn't expect much from this considering there was only one review and the rating was about average. The plot has been done before - evil twin remnant left at childbirth wants a chance to live - but this one took it to the extreme. I don't think I gave away much, but put a spoiler alert anyway. The acting was excellent and so was the directing. The visuals were well done too. It's rare for me to find a movie so utterly disturbing. Most of the horror these days is just plain silly. This one got my heart pumping and I actually felt the pain this woman was going through. I recommend this movie, but go in with low expectations. You may be surprised like I was.

  • Run-of-the-mill horror title; tried to be "Smart" but mediocre sadly.

I would probably not have bothered with this film, but a good friend REALLY wanted to see it, so we went and checked it out. At this point in modern film-making, there is nothing new under the sun...especially in the "Horror genre"...sadly that is also true of this title. The plot has been done before in 2009's "The Unborn" more or less, but this run through has 2 twin sisters, rather than a boy and a girl. The beginning is OK, there does seem to be a supernatural basis to the origin of the individual who gets the ball rolling in the first 5 mins (pun intended), but this element is never really pursued again; if at all...then only in the final 20 minutes, but it is never specifically mentioned as such...merely by assumption. There are your compulsory characters that serve no purpose other than to die! Obligatory annoying individuals who you wish would die (some do thankfully), littered throughout, along with the typical in the social media/see short attention span modern age; jump cuts that make up for not having sensible transition scenes between main scenes. To be fair the editing is probably the best part of this film, so they at least did a competent job of splicing all the celluloid together (if they even still do that?). The acting is passable in the main. The 2 female leads do OK, but their friendship being not quite sisters/not quite lovers/who knows what, really fails to convince and you can almost see them switching out of character before the director yells "CUT!" in a handful of scenes. I had to laugh where she ties herself up thinking it will stop her nocturnal antics; as if she tied herself up...by definition she can untie herself!...Anyway if she was serious in any way about protecting those around her, she would have asked to be committed/observed...I mean seriously; the operation was in a couple of days for Christ sake! The ending is totally predictable, by 25 minutes in you know the next hour is a formality. There is no 1 memorable scene unless you like freakish transformation effects (barely there tbh), and I cannot think why anyone would want to see this more than once...so buying on DVD is a non-starter. With so many other horror titles available, including a back catalogue of quality films from 60s/70s/80s, it is hard to recommend this film for any particular reason. If you're watching cable TV late and are too lazy to reach for the remote...check it out...Maybe!

  • nice surprise, i liked it

Took me a while before I watched this one because just see the low ratings. really, I loved it and I even found it one of the better horrors of 2016. I agree, it isn't going to be for everyone. Therefor you really must dig a bit of arty camera-work and editing but if you can pass that you are into a flick that gives you more horror then you expected. You can watch it as a straight horror or you can watch it like it's all about schizophrenia. If you do so there's more to catch. The problem is that I can't say too much about the story but it did work for me. And yes, some scene's are a rip- off of those Asian flicks like the black hair coming out of the mouth but towards the end the gore comes in. Let Her Out, the title does says it all, was a nice surprise and it really cut into my flesh. Recommend it to all geeks. Gore 1,5/5 Nudity 1,5/5 Effects 4/5 Story 3/5 Comedy 0/5
