Family vacation at a remote house by the sea - Helen, Johannes and their daughter Frances. Something is amiss. Slight confusions, subtle shifts in reality. An indistinct anxiety grows, while the house unfolds a disturbing story around a little boy, who tries after his mother's death to save his sorrowing father with piano music. But things change. Everything is connected. All of them play boules: whoever touches the center, loses. Times get blurred. A stranger appears. Seems oddly familiar. The family structure gets cracks. Something unspoken in between. Lost memories urge to the surface: Pain, sounds, picture fragments haunt Helen - vestiges of the past. She delves deep into her subconscious mind in search of an answer: But what does it take? The mosaic becomes a picture. A disquieting silence. Nothing really disappears. Nothing is ever really forgotten.

Meeres Stille (2013) Reviews
A film that stays with you
I think this is my first review. No spoilers - the summary says enough. Wonderful acting, beautiful cinematography and an intriguing, haunting double storyline which merges near the end. As a debut film, this is superb work. The major characters – Helen, Johannes, Frances and Leon – all have great depth. This is probably not a film for those who like a lot of action. It's slow moving, but necessarily so and the 2 hours 22 minutes never drags. I'm intrigued though that it was first shown at Sao Paolo Film Festival in 2013 while it doesn't seem to have gone on general release until 2015 (Germany) and it didn't reach Denmark until May 2016 - despite several film festival nominations and awards.
