Monkeys Are Pink (2015) Reviews
Review by Kat Nancy Cumti
Jake Connor Moss' film, Monkeys are Pink illustrates the pressures placed on our youth by our culture, and by themselves. Depicting hopelessness within self, within the domestic space, and within human relationships, Moss utilises explicate imagery and a superb soundtrack, portraying the delicate intimacy that occurs behind closed doors. Juxtaposing this against blatantly familiar public situations experienced by Australian teens, draws the audience in by setting a tone of blunt realism, getting across the commonality and reality of these issues present within our local culture. This draws the viewer in and bridges the gap of distance we tend to place between ourselves and the problems occurring today. Monkeys Are Pink relates, not only to external pressures of isolation and alienation, but more importantly highlights the internal battles that surround identity. Placing a spotlight on the conversations we have within our own minds.
Monkeys Are Pink
A promising debut for director Jake Connor Moss, 'Monkeys are Pink' is a great example of a modern day coming of age film showcasing troubled youth in their natural habitat. The sinuous quality of the plot works exceptionally well and you can clearly see Moss' firm direction; giving us a glimpse into the world of 'Monkeys Are Pink' through a raw and personal lens. This film has managed to alternate from character to character on screen whilst maintaining its authenticity. Solid cinematography and gripping performances throughout the film. Jake Connor Moss has successfully been able to navigate our minds through the unfiltered reality of modern society adolescence in a tragically brilliant way. A truly engaging piece of work, always looking forward to seeing what this young artist does next.
