Rene di Rosa is smitten by art. Rene is unusual because his goal is neither about interior decorating nor increasing his social status, but about the pure joy of discovery. He has the world's largest (over 2,000) and most notable collection of Northern California art; at times colorful, figurative, humorous, rebellious, political, and radical. "It is my greatest pleasure. Without it, I can't function." -- Rene di Rosa

Smitten (2005) Reviews
Enjoyable and Interesting Documentary Short
I thought this was a very engaging story of an 85 yr old man, Rene di Rosa, in Northern California who has collected regional art for years. I saw it at the Waterfront Film Festival in Saugatuck, Michigan and thoroughly enjoyed it. I was drawn into the story of this man and his interest in art. You get to see a lot of his collection, which is very interesting. Mr. di Rosa is a very inspiring individual. His love of art is very clearly shown in the documentary. The director, Nancy Kelly, did a wonderful job sharing this man's story and the story of his art. I enjoyed learning about what drew him to the art and how central it is to his life.
Worthwhile viewing
This is a fascinating, albeit abbreviated, look at Rene di Rosa, which I have seen several times on PBS. Many of the the art works I would probably never have seen, if not for him and director Nancy Kelly. I have to admit that I may have not appreciated some of them as much, had I not seen them in this context, although that is difficult to determine. My only complaint is that this is too brief (otherwise, I would rate it 10/10.) I would have liked to have seen more about Rene di Rosa's entire life, more of the artworks, and perhaps even more about the artists themselves (although Mr. di Rosa would probably disagree upon that last point.) I have to say that I like his style, and I was thoroughly impressed by the man, the art, and this entire piece. An enjoyable musical accompaniment rounds out, "Smitten," a work of all art for all ages to enjoy. See it!
