Tere Bin Laden: Dead Or Alive (2016) Reviews

  • Sikandar Kher Shines in this Uneven Sequel!

    namashi_12016-03-02

A sequel to the much-loved Tere Bin Laden, 'Tere Bin Laden: Dead or Alive' is sadly an Uneven Sequel, that lacks the spirit & the humour of its prequel. Though fun in parts, the film never turns into a hilarious joyride. Sikander Kher, however, delivers one of the best performances of the year so far! 'Tere Bin Laden: Dead or Alive' Synopsis: A Bollywood director is hired by an American talent agent to make a film on Osama bin Laden. The plan to use an Osama doppelganger in order to prove his death boomerangs when a Taliban arms dealer hijacks their idea to prove he's alive. 'Tere Bin Laden: Dead or Alive' has a dull start, but things begin to move once Sikandar's character goes through a make-over & how his motives result into some rib-tickling moments with the character of Paddi (played by Pradhuman Singh). Sadly, the pace again drops pre-climax & even the end to this story seems hurried. My only question to the Writers is, why did you keep it down on the humour? Wasn't that the brand here? The Screenplay has a few punches, but overall, they lack consistency. Abhishek Sharma is not in form this time. After The Shaukeens, this is another missed opportunity from the director. Cinematography is decent. Editing & Art Design are mention-worthy. Performance-Wise: As mentioned before, its Sikandar all the way. He's simply superb in both the roles he depicts, one as the US Agent & the other as the loud Punjabi Film Producer. Its good to see the actor finally getting a role that exhibits his talent to the hilt. Manish Paul is over-the-top, while Pradhuman Singh is very cute as Paddi. Piyush Mishra is a riot in his part. Sugandha Garg is natural the core. Ali Zafar is effective in a cameo. On the whole, besides some fine acting, 'Tere Bin Laden: Dead or Alive' scores lower on laughs.

  • Laden is back with a bang!

Tere Bin Laden : Dead or Alive doesn't live up to the jolly first part, but is a delight to watch! A U.S. agent hires a budding Bollywood filmmaker to shoot fake footage that proves the death of Osama bin Laden. But on the other hand, terrorists hijack the process, demanding the film to prove Osama is alive. Manish Paul as Sharma is wonderful. He might go on establishing a career in the film industry. Pradhuman Singh as Paddi Singh is hilarious and sometimes you can't stop giggling because you don't expect one of the world's dangerous terrorist to have a funny personality. Sikandar Kher as David Chaddha has done terrific acting and might make an epic comeback in the film industry with Tere Bin Laden. Iman Crosson will blow your mind as he impersonates President Barack Obama And watch out for a hilarious cameo by Ali Zafar, star of the first film of the series The only drawback is that sometimes the jokes go repetitive and slowly become annoying. Also funny scenes are limited in second half. But overall, a thumbs up for Tere Bin Laden : Dead Or Alive

  • Osama is probably rolling in his grave after watching this average sequel.

Tere Bin Laden Dead Or Alive, is not a bad film, nor is it a great sequel to the hugely popular Tere Bin Laden the 2010 cult classic comedy. I honestly feel that makers and Director Abhisek Sharma should have waited till they got a better story before making part 2, because TBL 2's biggest problems is that it has a poor script. However the film is completely crazy and zany, and some comic punches/ ideas do hold the viewers attention. The actors especially Sikandar Kher and Piyush Mishira do there bit well. But will this over the top spoof comedy hold the audiences attention, lets analyze. Story wise Sharma wants to become a film director and escapes from the clutches of his Halwai father to Bollywood. He meets Paddi Singh who has an uncanny similarity with Osama Bin Laden and the germ of an idea pops up in his mind. He narrates a story idea to the silent producers Shetty sisters. 'Tere Bin Laden' starring Ali Zafar and Paddi goes on to become a big hit and a sequel is being planned. Scheming CIA agent David turns into slimy Bollywood film Producer David Chaddha with a sexy assistant in Junior in tow. He is on the lookout for Paddi Singh. The dreaded Mujahid Khalil is also on the lookout for Paddi as well. Mayhem follows and even President Obama joins the cast too. Acting wise Sikandar gives a standout performance in TBL 2. The way he does the American, and Punjabi accent is amazing (its very authentic), and with extensive makeup job he is unrecognizable. His character will have you in splits (probably the only time you really laugh). Piyush Mishra has the best dialogues to mouth, and his whole angle of terrorists being poor after the death Osama, is funny. If only his character got more substantial screen time. Manish Paul is wasted, his comic talent is not used properly, he just does the same thing he does on TV. Pradhuman Singh's character of Osama loses a lot of novelty during the course of the film because his role is to redundant. There is nothing new to offer, other than same jokes. TBL 2 is a spoof film, the film spoofs the prequel, they spoof bollywood, they even spoof the killing of Bin Laden, and the way the American government works. While with these ideas a great comedy could have been made, but TBL 2, ends up being a muddled attempt. The film hardly soars above mediocrity. For me I just couldn't believe the extremely over the top premise, things were just way too illogical even for a Bollywood film. The films editor, tried editing the film in such a way that the film was so fast moving that the viewers would overlook the dumb plot errors, but that does not happen unfortunately. For example is it really that easy to make a Bollywood film, or convince someone to make a Hollywood film, like come on don't think your audience is that dumbfound. However some of the films zany ideas do provide laughs, and not all is lost because of the films fast pacing, one is really never bored cause of the fast proceedings. The whole terrorist Olympics scene had me roaring in laughter, the way the American government played drone attacks was hilarious too and those scenes are the films highlight. Even the films actors Sikandar and Piyush make sure they give there all to the film, which makes TBL 2, more enjoyable. But the films jokes, and comic punches fall flat more often then not, the whole Obama angle just didn't work for me, and needed to be edited out.Technically speaking the films music was bad the six pack abs song was ear bleeding bad, the vfx was okay, but the whole helicopter scenes were amateurish. The cinematography was nice, and dessert scenes looked good. Overall TBL 2 is a average film at best, and really doesn't live up to the cult classic prequel. Watch the film if you are bored this weekend, otherwise you will enjoy it more on DVD. While it was funny at times its still a disappointing watch for me. 55% C- grade 2.5/5*

  • Sikander Kher shines again

Sequels always run the risk of falling short of expectations. In 2010, Tere Bin Laden emerged as surprise hit with its abundant laughs and particularly smart writing. This time director Abhishek Sharma is hardly able to conjure up an equally enticing story. The chuckles are fewer and the wit from the first part is nowhere to be seen. Franchises are mostly created for moolah and that could be a valid reason for this sequel as well, but with the lack of an effective story to go with it, the results aren't appealing. The humour is rather low-IQ and most gags are far from enjoyable. The laughs are fewer and restrict themselves primarily to the first half. A certain Olympia-e-dehshat is the only one scene that will have you in splits. There is something funny about a bomb relay race and watching terrorists compete to win a suicide jacket personally autographed by Osama. Their starstruck eyes are bound to tickle your funny bones. A good part of the first hour features Ali Zafar who is nothing like the clever man you remember from the 2010 original. He plays an arrogant superstar who dances to an odd item number about his six-pack abs. Manish Paul is earnest but the television host inside him outdoes the actor. Sikander Kher in his dual role is seen having a ball of a time, which reflects in his performance. Iman Crosson and Piyush Mishra are absolutely wasted. And, Pradhuman Singh is endearing in his part.
