The Wind (2018) Reviews

  • Great slow burn psychological thriller...

    Wikkid_Gamez2019-04-06

Ok, that first review is a bit much to read and a bit over thought ... Don't let it detour you from giving this movie a chance if you like the slow burn psychological thriller type of movies (fast paced gore fans will probably find it dull). Its very well done in my opinion. Good acting, nice steady pace that keeps the suspense flowing. The few special effects it does have are done well and not cheesy. Definitely worth taking a chance on. I love the fast gore fest stuff as well if done right but this is definitely not that. I am not saying much about what happens as I do not like posting spoilers so I am leaving it at that.

  • Demon praying on the American frontier

    sanjidparvez2019-04-09

This is a damn good psychological horror with a Western setting. Beautifully shot, edited and loaded with atmosphere, THE WIND sets the story on the American frontier, where a lonely wife, Lizzy living in a desolate cabin in the middle of nowhere begins to sense a sinister presence that seems to be borne of the land itself, an overwhelming dread that her husband dismisses as superstition. When a newlywed couple arrive at a nearby homestead, the whispering wind returns, setting a motion of eerie chain of events resulting violence & death. With a well balanced non-linear narrative, THE WIND pay-offs more or less the same way THE BABADOOK did. Highly recommended.

  • great blend of an american western and slow-burn psychological thriller

    ryansiath2019-04-07

This film may not be for every horror fan because it is slow paced and flashback oriented, which creates some confusion and boredom. However, the actors were convincing and the cinematography exuded a feeling of true desolation. Several of the scenes were nicely crafted without relying on overt gore or jump scares to frighten the audience. I thought it was clever to blend an american western period piece with a demonic, neurotic tone. I think this movie is definately worth a watch and is one of the more original horror films as of late.

  • Indie psychological thriller with a hard female gaze

    hunter_michaela2019-04-10

So; just putting my personal bias out there; I love a good psychological indie thriller/ horror, especially one with a historical and/or religious element. Roughly up until the 1900s (not sure of the exact dates but educated guess) it's likely that mental illness was treated as a physical manifestation of the devil, so when we watch a film like this we are wondering whether they are crazy or whether it's IRL demons. I actually prefer lower budget horrors sometimes as I think the plot has to work harder due to the inability to create CGI monsters or whatever (which I'm not that interested in anyway). If you enjoyed the VVitch or the Exorcist you might be into this. The film centres around Elizabeth and her husband Isaac who live in the middle of ominous tumbleweedy nowhere. From the outset, the tale is dark and shocking. The couple were not always alone but had neighbours in the form of a bored and flirty Emma and her downtrodden husband Gideon (the female characters have the most dialogue in this film, so the male characters personalities are pretty much suggested via their views only.) Emma was pregnant but despite Lizzie's efforts to save them, both she and the newborn are dead. The film skips backwards and to the present to explain what exactly has occurred. I noticed that quite a few reviews complain about the pace, but I really thought it was pretty ample; given that it picks up in speed and has abit too appropriate of a climax. Perhaps it actually picks up too fast, tries too hard to scare us and becomes a little silly (what with all the ghosts and demons running around the actual plains/ the plains of Lizzie's mind). The cinematography, especially at the end is stunning. The performance of the female lead (Caitlin Gerard - whom I've never seen before so my perception can't be informed by anything else) really holds it all together and the strength of the film really lies in the femme centric gaze and her true isolation. 7.5/ 10

  • fairly good

The wind is a fresh breath of ol'wild west, and the conquering of the blessed land over the ocean, and the fertile grounds to build on and harvest from, just if it hadnt been for ''the wind. its a smallcast horrordrama, the story couldve been better and more fulfilled in its narrative, but the acting are good, no major flaws found, and the lovations and settings are mwellpicked and well created. the big dilemmais to me : is it a horror film or is it just a drama of desillusioned womanhood, due to far too much loneliness on the prairie, with vast distances to the nearest neighbour, that might be even more insane, and the burden of having a husband that wont see or listen to whats tormenting this womens mind must have been a gruelling terror spiced up with religous faith and its opposite, the devil, as were a usual cause for womens insanity in a mans mind,''shes been dancing with the devil, and riding to bloksberg on her broomstick, to enjoy satyrical orgies with satan in hell''- kinda explonation that especially reverends made up mat that time. so whatever its is, its a good film, a bit slow and dark visuals, but the grumpy old man found this more than recommendable
