Celia (2012) Reviews
Meh
Rodrigo Garcia is a powerhouse. I've always enjoyed his feature filmmaking. He's daring, complex, and subtle. And his work on IN Treatment is unparalleled. Therefore, I had high expectations going into CELIA, a short film he wrote and directed for an online network. Especially with the embarrassingly talented Dakota Fanning as one of the leads. Unfortunately, after viewing CELIA, I was left unimpressed and underwhelmed. The subject matter - which is sensitive - and cleverly set up by Garcia - falls pray to false execution. I feel like too much was crammed into too short a time span. This film couldn't breath, instead it felt suffocated. Lifelong friendship vs. medical responsibility
"Celia" is a 9-minute movie from 3 years ago starring Allison Janney as the title character. And just like in the role for which she won Emmys these last 2 years, she shows us here as well that she is strong with considerably younger co-lead to who she can act like a mother (figure). In this case, we have Dakota Fanning, who is considered among the most talented actresses from her age group. This little movie was written and directed by Rodrigo García, an Emmy nominee himself. It is about a young woman who is pregnant and goes to see a new doctor. that doctor has been a lifelong friend to the girl's parents, so Janney's character is not only confronted with the question if she will perform the abortion, but also with the issue if she should talk about with the girl's mother. Complicated scenario for her and she clearly struggles with what she should do, completely in contrast to Fanning's character, who knows exactly what she wants. I thought there were no moments of real greatness in here, but it felt like an authentic little story and overall, I recommend the watch, especially if you are a fan of either of the 2 actresses in here. thumbs up.
