Robot Wars (2016) Reviews

  • Dark side of technologies to come

    Dusan_Indjic-Luigi2017-04-11

I think this title is being underrated, having on mind low budget approach and the difficulties it makes for the production team. Thus, it's a narrow guided story about mostly negative sides of fast approaching technologies like, among others: augmented reality, communications, robotics, body/nerve augmentation (i.e. implants), artificial intelligence, so forth so on. It is put in dystopian corporation-based society. But if put objectively, it must be. If one looks around from just a bit of distance, that's exactly what's happening in this century; being predicted by many authors, books and movies. Along with technologies that they will fight upon. Humane factor will be less and less present not only because of falling financial (economy-driven) importance in neoliberal society, but also of all the perks the technology gives over human (if both physically and emotionally is for the viewer to conclude). But yes, almost every movie making aspect should be "More". It's thin in most cinematographic aspects. Instead of listing them I will just say why I gave it a 4 over 3. Basically, the audacity of makers to approach such a rich subject in the quite expansive Action-styled genre of Sci-Fi, and a pleasure to see those technologies visualized (mostly from first-person camera). I think it's worth a look for all the lovers of those, for it will give them yet another glimpse into some aspects of coming Brave New world.

The alternative title is "Kill Box" which makes more sense as there was never any robot wars. The robot in it was less effective than those from Rocketman in the 40's and 50's. This was not high tech science fiction. In the future, the PAC Sinclair company gets a team together to steal the AME 500A prototype weapon from Milicore Industries. They were successful, but get caught by a group living outside corporation control. We discover what the weapon does at 47 minutes into the film, not overly impressive. The acting was bad. Everyone had an "eye cam" so everything was filmed in first person point of view, i..e. shaky and from a bad angle. It was like watching the worst of "Hardcore Henry." The film was mostly people running around hiding and shooting at each other...adults playing hide n' seek with guns and rocket man helmets. Guide: F-word. No sex or nudity.

  • What did I just witness?

*** WARNING: SPOILERS *** What the heck is this movie? Where do I even start? First of all, the whole movie is filmed off of some crappy video recorder from the 90s taped to someone's head. Point two, WHERE ARE THE ROBOTS!? The movie is called Robot Wars and I only see two scenes with a robot in it. Number three is WHY DO PEOPLE HESITATE TO FREAKIN SHOOT BAD GUYS!? JUST PULL THE TRIGGER! And this is why I give this movie a 1 out of 10.

Here's my spoiler alert: I'm gonna really really try to not be mean in this review. But it's gonna be next to impossible to write an honest review without sounding mean. Popped this on in the background while I was working, 'cause I do love me some sci-fi. Even bad, cheesy sci-fi. Pretty soon, it was just kinda like trying to not watch a train wreck. You know you should turn away, but you can't, because the immature, spiteful part of you wants to see if it's really as bad as it seems. Oh, it's worse. The only way I can figure that this got made is the principals involved have really really rich parents who gave them a bunch of money and told them to "go play and leave the grown-ups alone for a while" so the kids decided to make a "really neat cool movie with Robots(?) and Guns and Explosions and a Really Evil Bad Guy!". Eh. I still got my work done.

Think 'The Martian', then think no budget, poor script and the director should not play the lead role, then this is a very good film. The premise: Man shipwrecked on stranger shores. Cinematography-wise, I give it 8+/10. A lot of the visuals give this film a huge boost, an A+. Honestly, I have'nt seen better in a lot of Hollywood attempts. This film has been slammed in other, angry, neanderthal reviews, but the fact is, it is of its type: Naive, hopeful and unashamedly trying to tell a story with limited resources. Overall? Definitely worth a watch. Rock Your Boat Scale: 2 bordering 2.5 (3 if your very drunk) Just my take.
